The last festival, which was held digitally due to the global pandemic saw the entry of "Once Upon A Time in Uganda", a documentary film by Cathryne Czubek and Hugo Perez.
It follows the interesting yet unlikely story of Isaac Nabwana, the defacto founder of "Wakaliwood". And his American enthusiast Alan Hofmanis on their journey to make and promote Ugandan movies.
Hofmanis sold everything and left his life in New York behind, to come and build Wakalowood with a passionate film maker he'd never met.
In the film however, Hofmanis seems to have had a falling out with Nabwana, which details, are unclear in the film, but one thing remained true, that their love and passion for Ugandan Film hadn't faded one bit.
But whichever way this goes, we'll always know that Isaac Nabwana will remain in the history books as one of the few, at the very least, that took a seemingly impossible chance at his film industry dreams and peaked the interest, curiosity and imagination of millions around the world, including Alan Hofmanis, who was inspired enough to take a wild chance on Nabwana, a guy from thousands of miles away that he'd never met.
Hopefully we can see a reconciliation and some real growth, and improvement in this genre moving forward, but for now, one thing remains sure, that Nabwana will continue to do what he does best, which is make movies.
Isaac Nabwana is still the Writer Producer & Director at Ramon Films, which is his production company.
