Trailblazing filmmaker Loukman Ali is quietly building anticipation for his next feature film, The Cakewalk (a working title). An upcoming thriller that is set to be a grittier and more character-driven follow-up to his debut feature The Girl in the Yellow Jumper (2020), promising to refine the raw energy of the first.
In an exclusive with Sinema Focus, Ali opened up about the project, describing The Cakewalk as a road-trip thriller laced with action and chaos. The story centers on a struggling filmmaker kidnapped by his ex-girlfriend and thrust into a wild, drug-fueled trip. Its a story that blends tension, dark humor, and personal stakes— things Loukman hopes will deliver a more polished experience than his 2020 debut, which he candidly views as a learning curve despite its milestones.

Production on The Cakewalk began in mid-2025, with Loukman sharing ungraded frames of the film in August to tease early momentum. True to his independent roots, the film is a self-funded endeavor shot deliberately in segments to maintain narrative continuity and to avoid the pressures of rushed schedules.
Longtime collaborator Michael Wawuyo Jr. is involved, together with newcomer to Ali's world, Allan Kutos Katongole, known for his captivating performances such as the one in the short film Building 62 and no doubt about Andrew Ahuura of Quad A Studios scoring the film

Ali continues to prioritize tight, dependable teams for these projects. He says he's now focusing his process on writing and character development, finding it more therapeutic than his earlier cinematography-focused approach. "Writing now comes first," he shared in the interview, signaling a deeper investment in story and script as he corrects what he sees as past missteps.
No official premiere date or distribution details have been shared yet, but Loukman remains optimistic for a 2026 release.
