The iKON Film and Television Awards is gearing up for a transformative fourth edition this year, now on a new mission to expand its reach across Africa under the theme "Beyond Borders". The event which was originally a Uganda-centric celebration of creativity, excellence, and innovation in film & television has now evolved into a platform for continental storytelling, particularly spotlighting East and Central African narratives.
In a key development announced recently, organizers postponed the main awards ceremony to Saturday, August 15, 2026 at the Serena Hotel in Kampala, Uganda. This shift from the earlier planned date of March 28, 2026 was made because of the increased interest and demand from international filmmakers, with over 200 film submissions already received from across the continent.
The rescheduling allows for greater participation, deeper
collaborations, and preparations for a live broadcast event to major media
platforms, ensuring broader accessibility and impact.

"Beyond Borders" Theme and Continental Activations
The "Beyond Borders" theme for 2026 embodies a vision of unity, crossing geographical divides, and fostering collaboration among African creatives. Leading up to the main event, the iKON team has rolled out iKON Activate, a series of industry gatherings, masterclasses, networking sessions, and activations in multiple countries, including Nigeria, Nairobi (Kenya), and Kigali (Rwanda).
These events have sparked essential discussions on regional
storytelling, shared markets, and collective growth.
The 2026 program will also feature a Film & Content Market, an
International Film Festival, and the Grand Awards Ceremony, providing
sustained opportunities for networking, resource mobilization, and global
visibility.

Strategic Partnerships, Fellowships, and High-Profile Engagements
As this cross border momentum continues to build, a recent partnership with Blue Pictures Entertainment appoints iKON as the implementation partner for programs such as SIRA in Uganda, focusing on pop-up events, labs, screenings, co-productions, distribution, and access to international festivals and markets.
Star power has also amplified the buildup, with South African actor,
producer, and Netflix personality Thapelo Mokoena visiting Uganda in
mid-February 2026.
During his Africa tour, he delivered keynote addresses, masterclasses,
and media sessions at the iKON African Film Forum, urging filmmakers to
approach the industry professionally while strengthening ties between Southern
and East African creative communities.
As a rising force in continental cinema, the 2026 iKON Awards will
transform from its Ugandan roots into a continental-wide celebration that
stands as an essential platform for the new global African conversation and
narrative.
