LOS ANGELES — Ugandan director and journalist Moses Bwayo is set to direct Champions of Nowhere, a feature documentary exploring resilience through sport in one of the world’s largest refugee settlements.
The film centers on the Kakuma Football League at Kenya’s Kakuma Refugee Camp. Amid harsh conditions, refugees from diverse backgrounds find identity, hope, and dignity through the universal language of football. Bwayo, who brings deep personal insight into East African stories of struggle and aspiration, described the project as a window into “what sports and a fighting spirit can bring to a community.”
Bwayo gained international acclaim as the co-director and cinematographer of "Bobi Wine: The People’s President (2022)", the gripping documentary on Ugandan musician and opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi. The film earned Oscar, BAFTA, and Directors Guild of America nominations, marking a historic milestone as the first Ugandan-directed project to reach that level of recognition.
Champions of Nowhere launches a three-picture co-production deal and partnership between Pierce Capital Entertainment (Thomas Pierce) and FilmCrew Media (Kevin and Toby Schmutzler), producers of the Kenya-set "Nawi". For Bwayo, this project continues his signature blend of journalistic deligence and cinematic realism.
As production advances, 'Champions of Nowhere' promises to spotlight overlooked stories of hope emerging from places once called “nowhere.”
