Kampala, Uganda – Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, the esteemed Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda and the Member of Parliament for East African Community Affairs, has pledged her commitment to establishing a dedicated and permanent home for filmmakers in Uganda.
Kadaga made this promise during her attendance at this years Uganda Film Festival Awards, organized by the Uganda Communications Commission, where she was the special guest for the awards.
In her remarks, Kadaga expressed her concerns regarding the current state of the film industry, stating, "I was sitting there thinking and discussing with Dr. Baryomunsi, we really need to find a good home for this industry, because they are scattered and no one is in charge", she assured Dr. Baryomunsi, "You can count on my support in the cabinet to ensure that we give them (filmmakers) a proper place where they belong."
Her announcement was met with enthusiastic applause from the filmmakers in attendance, signaling strong support for her initiative. Following her speech, Kadaga had the honor of presenting the Award for Best Feature Film 2024 to Nisha Kalema for the film MAKULA (2024), which also earned her the award for Best Director moments earlier.
The Uganda Film Festival is an annual week-long event that includes various film workshops and training sessions, culminating in a gala night that celebrates the achievements of the industry. Kadaga's commitment to the filmmakers underscores the potential for growth and development within Uganda's fast growing film sector.
